Anna C. Ortega Chavolla:

It was a small population. There were three Latinx people who were in my program. But we all knew each other. We were all from different areas. We knew we weren’t alone. We knew we were here. I had my crew.

Alexandria Martinez Meier:

We are celebrating the great work of programs that help underrepresented students across New York City build successful careers and lives in and outside of academia.

Alexandria Martinez Meier:

We’re giving students tools above and beyond what they can get themselves.

Natasha Bean:

We’ve had students who reached out to me within the first month who will say, “Hey, I might need a budget because I spent all the money my mother gave me for the semester.” And I’m like, “In a month?”

Anna C. Ortega Chavolla:

NYU STEP Program Parent:

If you have a teacher, you need to see yourself as a teacher. If you have a doctor, you need to see yourself as a doctor. It just gave them the ability to see themselves in other people. The room was just crowded with people.

Charlton McIlwain:

Years ago, I had the opportunity to be in front of a prominent philanthropist who ran a foundation, and invited me and a team from NYU in, to talk about the ways that we were trying to build access points, particularly for underserved students in and through higher education. The pitch I made being able to take all of our programs across the university and to have those programs collaborating, cooperating towards a common vision to work together to really significantly increase the pathways of underrepresented students, particularly from New York City schools that were coming in and through not only NYU, but other higher education institutions. I remember the gentleman looking at me and saying, “That was brilliant.” Then he said, “I have absolutely no confidence that NYU is able to pull that off.” I remember thinking at that moment, “Touche. Challenge accepted.”
